220 Sunset Avenue

The Atlanta Preservation Center is very encouraged that additional time to study the importance 220 Sunset Avenue has been agreed upon. Preservation is a way to ensure that the future can benefit from the past in many ways.

220 Sunset Avenue, built circa 1950, is a significant, historic building due to its direct connection to Maynard Jackson, Atlanta's first African American Mayor, and as a representative example of African American craftsmanship.

The family of Rev. Maynard Jackson, Sr., including his son the late Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson Jr., lived at 220 Sunset Avenue for a period during the 1950s. As Mayor, Maynard Jackson gave Atlanta the Minority Business Enterprise program (MBE) and the Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) system that provided political and economic access to many that had not occurred previously. We hope we will see the same vision serve to promote the longevity of an Atlanta landmark and neighborhood that has given hope to many.
